RE: Shelving Mover Analysis
Gondola Train

This was used to move eight gondolas that were 40' to 50' in length with 19" and 22" bases. The gondolas had to move anywhere from 3' to 6'. This was to be done without downloading any product or downloading as little product as possible.

Product variety included Drugs, Paper, Spaghetti Sauce, Laundry Detergent, and Pantyhose.

The results of moving the gondolas over a three day period using five people were as follows:

Cost Analysis
Five (5) Clerks for Three Days (using avg of $14.00)   $1680.00
One (1) Carpenter for three Days   $1200.00
  TOTAL:   $2880.00
We would have used the following on past projects (without the gondola train):
Eighteen (18) Clerks for First Two Days   $4032.00
Twelve (12) Clerks for the Third Day   $1344.00
Two (2) Carpenters for Three Days   $2400.00
  TOTAL:   $7776.00
Dollars Saved for One Job        $4896.00

Using vendors could cut the cost of downloading and refilling of product. There would still be significant labor costs due to end displays, union contract provisions, and the actual lifting and moving of the gondolas. There is an extra cost when electric is involved.

Heavier aisles (ex: Laundry Detergent, Spaghetti Sauce, and Can Vegetables) required the use of a power jack and a 10' 2 x 4 to get the gondolas moving. Dirt must be cleaned from under the gondolas before moving them.

For future reference, another 35 - 3' rollers (enough to do 75' of a 3' sectioned aisle) would be needed with rack.
